    Menominee American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 146 held its regular meeting at the Legion Post, First Street on February 13, preceded by a potluck dinner. Julie Erickson, president, extended a welcome to ALA members. Shelly Kanyuh, chaplain, presented the opening prayer. Julie Erickson noted the flag colors were in place, and a moment of silence was given to the POW-MIA veterans. The ALA members recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and sang the “Star Spangled Banner”.

 

    Julie Hendrick, secretary, presented the January regular meeting minutes report, and Cindy Smith, treasurer, detailed the financial report. The reports were placed on file for audit.

 

    Barbara Kanyuh, Americanism chairman, reported that she has two brand shirts available for any member that may be interested.

 

    Marge Albert, Cheer chairman, reported mailing cards to the following: Nancy Alfredson, Tina Fifarek, Mary Lou Petty, and Linda Sieminski.

 

    Judy Pier, Children and Youth chairman, reported on the program, and various awards available.

 

    Julie Hendrick and Barbara Kanyuh, Girls State chairpersons, reported six applicants are currently being interviewed to attend the 78th Session of Girls State to be held in June, 2018 at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan. A discussion followed on expenses, and transportation for the six perspective delegates.

 

    Donna Lewis, Membership chairman, reported Unit 146 membership is currently at 261 with a goal of 263. Interested new members may contact Lewis @ 906-863-1679 for additional information.

 

    Evie Koutnik, Poppy chairman, reported May 17, 18-19 as upcoming poppy days in the City of Menominee; further information forthcoming.

 

    Connie Kewley, Public Relations chairman, reported on the media news releases that were submitted, and effectiveness along with the Unit 146 Calling Committee. In addition, the membership was recognized for all their contributions to the ALA, and presented with a valentine heart for Valentine’s Day.

 

    Julie Hendrick, secretary, reported receiving thank you correspondence from the Salvation Army for the Unit’s monetary donation.

 

    Jane Raygo, Wreaths across America, chairman, reported monetary donations received from the Legionnaires, and Sons of American Legion Post 146.

 

    Julie Erickson, president, reported on the various reasons for Unit 146 to increase its membership dues for 2019. The members voted to increase the membership dues to $40.

 

    Erickson also informed the ALA that the Mid-Winter Conference report would be presented at the March 13 meeting. In addition, program chairpersons need to compile year-end reports to their District chairpersons by March 31. Discussion followed on program guides, and procedures.

 

    ALA Unit 146 approved the following budgeted items: Concerts in the Park, Walk for Warmth, Barb Palzewicz Foundation, and Menominee County ISD Imaginary Library.

 

    The upcoming events include: February 24: Mardi Gras (3 p.m.) @ Post 146; $20 ticket includes: food, music, raffle and event entry; February 28: Potluck dinner @ Post (6 p.m.); March 3: Menominee American Legion Red Waves bag groceries @ Jack’s Fresh Market (8 a.m. – 1 p.m.); March 13: ALA Meeting (anniversary/cake included) @ Post (6:30 p.m.); August 1st - 5th: American Legion Class A Baseball Tournament @ Spies Field, Menominee.

 

    Shelly Kanyuh, chaplain, concluded the meeting with a Prayer of Peace.
