The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 146 held its organizational meeting on September 12 at the Legion Post on First Street, preceded by a potluck dinner. Shelly Kanyuh, chaplain, offered the opening prayer. Julie Erickson, president, noted the flag colors were in place, and a moment of silence for POW-MIA veterans was observed. The ALA members recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and sang the “Star Spangled Banner”. Julie Erickson introduced new ALA members; Barbara Kent, and Jeanette Lawton.
Julie Hendrick, secretary, presented the June 13 regular meeting minutes report, and Cindy Smith, treasurer, presented the financial report. The reports were placed on file for audit.
Barbara Kanyuh, Americanism chairman, reported on the National American Legion Auxiliary Essay Contest, “How does learning about government, and our America, help you become a future guardian of the liberties of our country,” and Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy students that participated, and received recognition for their essays.
In addition, Kanyuh reported to membership that it was Homeland Security month, and an upcoming speaker is recommended. Also, the members were encouraged to return their profile questionnaire forms for processing.
Marge Albert, Cheer chairman, reported mailing a cheer card to Michelle Sutherland.
Julie Erickson reported for Anna Mae Amerman, Children and Youth chairman that a Menominee grade school student in need was provided with school attire, and supplies.
Sherry Nutter, Education chairman, extended a thank you to members for the generous amount of school supplies that were donated, and given to St. Vincent de Paul for local children in need. Nutter also reported a monetary donation was received from ALA member, Andrea Mann.
Julie Hendrick, Girls State chairman, reported delegates that attended the June, 2017 Girls State 77th Session at MSU, East Lansing, Mich. will be contacted to provide a presentation to members at the October 10 ALA meeting.
Donna Lewis, membership chairman, reported the 2018 membership goal for Unit 146 is 263, and members may contact her at 906-863-1679 to pay their annual dues, or inform her of address, name, or telephone corrections.
Donna Lewis, Veteran Affairs and Rehabilitation chairman, informed membership of the Adopt-a-Vet program at D. J. Jacobetti Veterans’ Home, Marquette, Mich., and status of Unit’s adoption. Lewis also reported that a patriotic quilt donated by Ginny Cappaert will be raffled at the December, 2017 ALA Christmas party which supports the program; contact Lewis at 906-863-1679 for additional information.
Donna Lewis, Ice Cream/Nacho Booth chairman for summer events at the Post, reported a decline in sales. Since the booth was profitable on the Fourth of July, it was recommended to membership to continue serving on that date.
Connie Kewley, Public Relations chairman, reported submitting 12 media releases, and extended a thank you to the calling committee for contacting members on events within the Post and Unit.
Julie Erickson reported ALA member, Jeannette Krause, has been named Bar Committee, chairman at Post 146. Krause reported there is no hunting raffle scheduled due to the Unit’s Christmas Ball Raffle. Also, carpet will be replaced in the bar areas, and patio deck extended. In addition, during certain Packer games, a pizza buffet for $5 is provided.
Julie Erickson, music chairman, reported to membership of members’ birthdays for August/September. Erickson also extended a thank you to Post 146 Color Guard participants attending special events/parades this past summer; also thank you to members who worked the food booths.
Jane Raygo, Wreaths Across America chairman, reported October 9 as the deadline for pasty orders that support this program; delivery pickup is scheduled November 6. Contact: Jane @ 906-863-3086.
Evie Koutnik, Christmas Ball Raffle chairman, reported to membership of a license application for the November/December raffle at the Post.
Julie Erickson introduced Steve Fifarek, Post 146 Commander to membership. Fifarek reported on a $100 donation fundraising effort. There will be a black granite commemorative display, indicating a name in honor of, or memory of engraved, submitted by donors to help defray costs of deck addition, and carpet upgrade. A postcard mailing to Post 146 members will take place.
ALA Unit 146 approved the 2018 Budget/Calendar of Events, and the following budgeted items: Department, and UPAA Mandatory dues, State Incorporation Fee, and Auxiliary Emergency Fund.
Upcoming events include: September 22-23 – Department Fall Conference; Muskegon, Mich., September 27 – Legion Post Potluck Dinner; 6 p.m., October 7 – UPAA Fall District Meeting @ Menominee (meeting - 9:30 a.m. CST, Lunch -12 p.m., meeting resumes - 1-3 p.m.), October 10 – ALA meeting/Girls State Report -6:30 p.m.
